The Organization

Old Skool Cafe (OSC) is a faith-based, violence prevention program that provides job training, employment, and a second chance at life by way of an evening jazz restaurant run by at-risk, formerly incarcerated, and foster care youth ages 16-22.

Position Summary

The Youth Development Manager (YDM) is a key member of the OSC leadership team, primarily responsible for building relationships with youth, and linking them to the tools and resources they need to succeed. The YDM oversees the coordination and administration of all aspects of OSC youth development including planning, organizing, leading, and controlling activities. Since our program is centered on an evening supper club, the YDM will also be present at the restaurant during open hours (5:00pm to 10:00pm) Tuesday - Saturday.

 

Primary Responsibilities

The critical deciding factor for a YDM to join OSC will be the fit with the vision, mission, and values of the organization. We are seeking a passionate professional with a broad skill set in youth development, and the passion to use those skills to make life-long impact in the lives of youth.

To this end the YDM will primarily oversee:

  • Program Management

    • Supervise all aspects of life and employment skills training.

    • Oversee departmental budget.

  • Team Management

    • Works closely with EPD, Assistant Manager, and Chef in daily youth supervision and support.

    • Lead weekly staff meeting for direct report(s).

    • Set goals and objectives and complete periodic reviews for team members.

    • Make employment and termination decisions in collaboration with the Executive Team while complying with state and federal law.

  • Youth Development

    • Serve as point person to manage crisis situations as they arise.

    • Supervise personal/spiritual development field trips.

    • Participate in birthday celebrations, graduation ceremonies and other special events.

    • Help organize and develop OSC Alumni Network.

  • Case Management

    • Help youth connect with community partnerships and programs to meet needs, including support services (housing, banking, transportation and rehabilitation), mentorship, and employment.

    • Regularly communicate progress with teachers, parole officers and Occupational Therapy Training Program (OTTP) staff (may require meeting off-site at school, court or other locations).

    • Attend court hearings and/or provide letters of recommendation and support.

  • Partnerships and Collaboration

    • Develop and cultivate connection and collaboration with other community and public sector organizations, local businesses, post-secondary education institutions and individuals for the purpose of generating opportunities for youth participating in the program.

    • Engage volunteers and interns for appropriate program activities using established volunteer management practices and internship curriculum.

Reporting Relationships

Reporting to the Executive Program Director, the YDM directly manages the Life Coach/Chaplain, and has overall supervisory responsibility for youth program activities.

Qualifications

We’re looking for a passionate, uniquely gifted leader who is curious, very teachable, highly professional, humble and confident, and emotionally intelligent.  

And since this position requires a broad base of skills and experience, the professional qualifications we’re looking for are:

  • Three (3) or more years experience in managing long-range projects involving community-based programs for youth, and children involved in homelessness, juvenile justice and commercial sexual exploitation.

  • Five (5) or more years experience working with community programs with a grasp of the resources available for at-risk youth, preferably in a multicultural setting

  • A Bachelor's degree in a related field such as sociology, psychology, or community development. Equivalent professional experience will also be considered.

  • Strong organizational abilities including planning, development and task facilitation.

  • Solid budget management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision-making and reporting.
